Meta is teaming up with Naver to connect Naver Map-based walking directions to its AI glasses.
Meta said on Sept. 29 it is working with Naver to enable real-time walking directions from Naver Map on Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta. The feature is set to be introduced within the year.
Naver is the first South Korean company Meta is working with in the AI glasses sector.
The partnership links Naver’s real-time walking directions feature, introduced in June, with Meta AI glasses. Once users connect their glasses in the Naver Map app, they can receive route guidance through the glasses’ open-ear speakers without repeatedly checking their smartphone screen while moving.
The scope of guidance is set to expand beyond basic directions to include entrances, nearby facilities and whether to use stairs or escalators.
A feature to check nearby information while on the move will also be added. The plan is to let users ask by voice for route-related information such as nearby cafes or hospitals and hear answers by calling a Naver Map-based voice agent.
Naver’s real-time walking directions are currently supported first on Android and will be rolled out to iOS in stages. Meta and Naver will continue work to improve guidance precision until the official launch.
The collaboration will also expand the Meta-Naver partnership from advertising into daily-life services. The two companies are also working together on an advertising business that links Naver’s AI ad solution AdBoost with Meta’s AI-based targeting technology.
A Meta official said the collaboration is expected to let users reach their destinations without frequently checking their smartphone screens when finding their way. The official added the company will expand everyday convenience provided by AI wearables.
Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta are AI glasses developed by Meta in cooperation with global eyewear company EssilorLuxottica. Users can interact with the AI assistant Meta AI by voice.
