Kakao Impact Foundation has released an AI transformation (AX) guide for nonprofit and social innovation organisations, based on its own experience and cases applied in the field.

Kakao Impact Foundation participated in the 3rd Korea Social Value Festa held at Seoul’s COEX on Sept. 21-22 and presented AI use cases carried out within the foundation and in the Tech for Impact field, it said on Tuesday.

The foundation has supported staff use of AI since April and has periodically measured changes in work methods. The share of staff who said they had improved work processes using AI rose to 65 percent by late August from 29 percent in April. Average daily time saved at work, as felt by staff, was tallied at 107 minutes.

As a field case, it introduced the Tech for Impact LAB AX. Kakao Impact Foundation is expanding AX support so on-site organisations can directly operate and improve the technology, in addition to the existing Tech for Impact LAB in which social innovators and IT experts develop technology together.

A representative example, Caring Note, is a service for recording and analysing medication counselling developed jointly by the incorporated association Neulpumgachi and IT experts. It records counselling content and then uses AI to automate medication records, cutting the time needed to manage counselling records to about one-third of the previous level.

Over 18 months after the service was introduced, the number of consultations at the visiting medication counselling centre rose to 53 from 10, and the number of clients increased to 437 from 120. The number of participating pharmacists also expanded to 30 from 6.

Since May, the foundation has supported Neulpumgachi so it can use AI coding tools to plan and improve functions needed on the ground.

The AX Guide for the Social Innovation Ecosystem, released on Tuesday, outlines five stages of processes needed, from setting AI use standards by organisation to establishing staff and data environments, periodic measurement and checks, and scaling at the organisational level. It also includes diagnostic questions and measurement criteria to assess the work environment and the level of AI use.

The guide is available to anyone on the Kakao Impact Foundation website. The foundation plans to release additional AX cases and results in December through a Tech for Impact results presentation.

Kakao Impact Foundation Chairman Seok-young Ryu (류석영) said the foundation would share with the ecosystem the experience and trial and error it gained by using AI first and applying it to its projects. He said it would work together to shape ways for AI to make practical contributions to solving social problems.
