A new variable-aperture camera applied to Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max has proved difficult to repair, reflecting its precise structure. If internal aperture parts are damaged, it is likely the entire camera module would need to be replaced rather than repaired individually, an analysis said.

On Sept. 21 local time, IT outlet Engadget reported that teardown specialist iFixit disassembled the two models to examine the variable-aperture structure. A variable aperture is a device that physically controls the amount of light passing through the lens, and it is applied to the main camera of the iPhone 18 Pro series.

Inside the aperture are 6 overlapping blades made of a polymer composite material as thin as human hair. The blades move using magnetic force and mesh precisely without catching to change the size of the aperture opening. iFixit called it an achievement of precision engineering but pointed out that "even a small deformation or foreign matter can cause operating problems."

The biggest obstacle to repair is that it is difficult to reassemble after taking parts apart. The tolerance between the blades is extremely small, and the adhesive is also difficult to remove, requiring specialised tools and skills. iFixit did not conclude that repairing the aperture itself is impossible, but said it is realistically very difficult work.

That does not mean the iPhone as a whole or the camera module cannot be repaired. According to iFixit, the main camera module is relatively easy to access and replace. The issue is that if the internal aperture fails, the entire module may need to be replaced instead of fixing only small parts.

Repair costs are also a variable. iFixit said "the camera module price for the existing iPhone 17 Pro is $249 (about 339,100 won)," raising the possibility that parts costs could rise with the new variable-aperture structure. The actual replacement parts price for the iPhone 18 Pro has not yet been disclosed.

A variable aperture in a smartphone is not being introduced for the first time. Samsung also applied a related feature to the Galaxy S9 in 2018 but excluded it from subsequent models. The iPhone 18 Pro’s new camera expands shooting options, but its actual repair costs and long-term durability remain to be seen.
