U.S. to overhaul grid connection rules for AI data centres to ease power supply bottlenecks
The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is set to comprehensively review grid connection procedures for large power-consuming facilities such as AI data centres, citing surging electricity demand from expanding AI infrastructure. FERC approved a draft show-cause order requiring six regional transmission organisations and transmission owners under its jurisdiction to explain current rules or submit reforms within 60 days. The agency aims to accelerate data centre connections while maintaining grid reliability and minimising impacts on general consumers’ power bills.
