Quantum computing era nears, companies face growing pressure to prepare for Q-Day
The timeline for preparing for “Q-Day,” when quantum computers could undermine key security systems used in the internet, communications networks and electronic devices, is moving up to around 2029 from 2035. TechRadar reported that Google and Cloudflare are accelerating preparations for a shift to post-quantum cryptography ahead of U.S. government guidance. The debate is shifting toward immediate action as firms face broad software and hardware upgrades, identification of vulnerable systems and rising operational and cost pressures.

Kyber ransomware first confirmed to use post-quantum cryptography in apparent psychological tactic
Kyber ransomware has been identified as the first confirmed case of using post-quantum cryptography, drawing attention across the security industry, analysts said. Rapid7 said its review of a Windows variant found it protected encryption keys with ML-KEM1024, while files were encrypted with AES-256. Experts said the move appears aimed at psychological pressure and marketing impact rather than operational need. Some variants also made overstated claims about using ML-KEM.

Quantum computers still not a practical threat to AES-128 symmetric encryption
Even if quantum computing advances, symmetric-key encryption such as AES-128 is not a realistic target for attacks, a claim said. Cryptography engineer Filippo Valsorda, who maintains the Go programming language’s cryptography standard library, said quantum threats should distinguish between public-key and symmetric-key cryptography. He said Shor’s algorithm threatens asymmetric systems such as RSA and ECDSA, while Grover-based attacks on AES-128 remain extremely costly. He also urged focusing resources on replacing Shor-vulnerable public-key cryptography.
