Countries may sell gold and buy bitcoin: five predictions for the cryptocurrency industry in 2026
Patrick Liu, institutional director at global cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, forecasts 2026 as a structural turning point for crypto markets. He said long-held beliefs on bitcoin’s cycle theory, regulation and capital flows may break down as crypto becomes more tied to institutions and macroeconomics. Liu expects reduced volatility as ETFs and derivatives deepen, crypto to emerge as a bipartisan U.S. midterm issue, prediction markets to expand, DAT mergers to accelerate, and at least one country to sell gold and buy bitcoin.
