Japan\'s 7 railway operators to switch to QR tickets from spring 2027
Major Japanese railway operators will switch from magnetic short-distance tickets to QR code tickets starting in spring 2027. Instead of inserting tickets into automatic gates, passengers will scan printed QR codes. The QR tickets will be usable on all lines and stations of the seven operators and will use a common system to issue tickets spanning different companies. The move aims to reduce maintenance burdens for existing ticket machines and gates.
