Ha Jung-woo stresses frontier AI self-reliance beyond foundation models, stays quiet on politics

Ha Jung-woo (하정우), vice chairman of the National AI Strategy Committee, said South Korea must build the capability to develop and operate frontier AI on its own, beyond creating a standalone foundation model. He said the country should unite top domestic capabilities rather than rely on firm-by-firm competition to narrow gaps with the United States and China. He also urged steps to reduce dependence on U.S. and Chinese technology and highlighted data use, data centre permits and supply chain stability as urgent issues. He largely avoided questions about his political future.

Busan regional postal office to aid flood-hit Geoje, Tongyeong with Post Office Shopping promotion

The Busan Regional Post Office is moving to support sales channels for small business owners in Geoje and Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, hit by heavy rain. It will run a “Hope Sharing Special Promotion for Heavy Rain-Damaged Areas” on its Post Office Shopping mall through next month 27. The promotion sells local products including agricultural and seafood items and processed foods. Buyers will receive coupons worth up to 7,000 won.

U.S. Treasury raises bar for foreign stablecoins, gives exchanges due diligence duty

The U.S. Treasury has issued draft rules that would impose tougher due diligence requirements on U.S. cryptocurrency exchanges and digital asset service providers handling foreign-issued stablecoins. Platforms would need to reasonably assess issuers\' ability and willingness to comply with lawful U.S. orders to freeze or seize tokens and to show reciprocal cooperation. The proposal outlines a phased rollout from 2027 and 2028 and sets conditions for eligible foreign issuers while keeping certain peer-to-peer and self-custody transactions exempt.
