Solar reshapes global power market as renewables top coal for first time
Global renewable electricity generation surpassed coal generation for the first time in more than 100 years, driven by rapid expansion in solar and wind. Renewables accounted for about 34 percent of global power output in 2025, edging past coal, according to figures cited by CleanTechnica and analysis by energy think tank Ember. Solar added more than 600 TWh year on year and met most of new demand. Grid delays and permitting remain challenges.
