Low-cost older smartphones become humanoid robot brains as $400 PhoneBot debuts
Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles have developed an open-source humanoid robot platform called PhoneBot that uses a low-cost Android smartphone as its camera, sensors and computing unit. The hardware excluding the phone costs about $400. The 48.3 cm, 1.8 kg robot uses 13 servo motors and runs key tasks on the phone. Tests used four Android phones, including the 2017 Honor 9. Limits remain in payload, dynamic motion and uneven terrain.
