Korean biology pioneer Cho Wan-kyu dies
Cho Wan-kyu (조완규), a biologist credited with pioneering South Korea’s basic biology field and a former president of Seoul National University and education minister, died early on July 13 at the age of 98. Born in Hwanghae Province in 1928, he earned bachelor’s through doctoral degrees in biology at Seoul National University. He identified key mechanisms controlling mammalian egg maturation and later led efforts on biotechnology policy and industry groups.
