MSIT sets 2027 budget at 29.6 trillion won, with 9.4 trillion won for AI

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT proposed a 2027 budget of 29.6 trillion won, up 24.5 percent from this year’s supplementary budget. AI spending would rise 84.3 percent to 9.4 trillion won, while R&D funding would increase 18.5 percent to 14.1 trillion won. The ministry plans investments in semiconductors, physical AI and AI data centres, expansion of GPU capacity for independent AI models, AI services and inclusion programmes, and funding for advanced technologies including quantum, biotech and space.

Kakao to hold \'AI Sail Summit 26\' in Busan

Kakao said on Sept. 1 its regional AI talent and company development body, Kakao AI Sail, will hold \'Kakao AI Sail Summit 26\' on Sept. 29 at the Busan Port International Exhibition and Convention Center (BPEX). The event targets about 800 founders, startup officials, students and developers. It will share Kakao Group AI transformation cases and AI technology trends at home and abroad, and support exchanges among regional AI companies and talent. It will also host an AI agent hackathon called Ralphton.

MSIT designates 11 new leading research centres for basic research programme

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT said on Wednesday it has newly selected 11 centres as leading research centres under its 2026 basic research programme. The scheme, launched in 1990, supports mid- to large-scale joint research and strengthens university collaboration and industry-academia-research links. The 11 centres span science, engineering and basic medical science. Each will receive 1.5 billion to 2.2 billion won a year for seven years.
