Shin Jin-chang appointed vice chair of Financial Services Commission

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on Oct. 16 appointed Shin Jin-chang, the Financial Services Commission\'s secretary general, as vice chair of the watchdog. The appointment was announced in a written briefing by senior presidential spokesperson Kang Yoo-jung. Shin, from Geumsan in South Chungcheong province, has held posts including director general for structural reform policy, and headed the financial industry and financial policy bureaus at the commission.

Proofpoint to buy data security firm Varonis for $6.3 billion

Cybersecurity company Proofpoint has agreed to acquire data security firm Varonis Systems for about $6.3 billion in cash, SiliconANGLE reported on Oct. 15. Proofpoint will buy Varonis shares for $49.75 each, a 52 percent premium to the stock price before takeover speculation surfaced. Bloomberg had reported private equity interest in Varonis in June and said Proofpoint emerged as a negotiating party in early September.

Google DeepMind says no evidence AI self-improvement is accelerating, diverging from industry warnings

Google DeepMind said it has not confirmed that AI is producing more advanced AI or that internal AI research is accelerating in a meaningful way. In a safety report on Gemini 4 Argon, it said no statistically significant change in progress has appeared since April 1, 2026, even though AI writes more than 75 percent of production code. It said automation remains limited and largely requires human direction, while some industry figures warn recursive self-improvement is already speeding up.
