Waymo has secured 953 robotaxis at its factory site in Mesa, Arizona, data showed. Of those, 684 have completed sensor installation and modifications and are ready for immediate deployment.

On Aug. 12, electric vehicle outlet Electrek reported that 72 percent of the total has already been modified.

The tally is based on aerial-photo analysis that jjricks_, a well-known Reddit user and professional reviewer, publishes each month. In the August update, the Mesa factory was counted as having 684 completed Ojai robotaxis and 269 new vehicles awaiting modification. The figures are not official, but they have been consistently used as an indicator showing changes in vehicle volumes on site. Using the same tracking method, the Ojai count in early June was about 500.

The most notable change is the appearance of robotaxis based on the Hyundai Ioniq 5. This count confirmed 12 completed Ioniq 5 robotaxis for the first time. It is the first time Waymo's second dedicated vehicle has been spotted among completed vehicles at the factory.

Ojai is Waymo's first dedicated robotaxi. The base vehicles are produced by China's Zeekr and sent to the Mesa factory, where parts supplier Magna completes them by installing Waymo's sixth-generation autonomous driving system. The sixth-generation hardware consists of 13 cameras, 4 lidar units and 6 radar units, cutting the number of sensors 42 percent from the previous generation. Waymo said the hardware cost is less than $20,000 per vehicle.

Waymo is pursuing a strategy to lower per-vehicle costs by combining cheaper sensors and base vehicles, and then expanding the scale of its robotaxi fleet. Ojai is replacing Waymo's existing fleet based on the Jaguar I-Pace, which had higher operating costs because it was not designed with autonomous operation in mind. Waymo began services using Ojai in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix earlier this year. Ojai began operating for some passengers in May, and Waymo later expanded the service.

Waymo currently handles more than 500,000 paid rides per week across several U.S. cities and is aiming to reach 1 million weekly rides by the end of 2026. With Waymo's operating fleet at about 2,500 to 3,000 vehicles in early 2026, the 684 completed vehicles waiting at the Mesa factory represent substantial capacity for fleet expansion at a single point in time. If many of them are put into actual service, Waymo can significantly increase its fleet.

A key point in this batch is that 684 of the 953 vehicles have already been modified. That shows conversions at the factory are well under way. The key variable going forward is likely how quickly completed vehicles are deployed into paid-ride service. The appearance of 12 Ioniq 5 units can also be seen as a move by Waymo to diversify its supply chain by adding a second vehicle platform. Waymo is applying its sixth-generation autonomous driving system to both the Zeekr-based Ojai and the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Waymo is already operating commercial services without drivers using fully autonomous driving, and in 2026 it has been rapidly expanding vehicles and service areas. Waymo currently handles more than 500,000 paid rides per week and is targeting 1 million by year-end.

Tesla's robotaxi business, by contrast, remains at a relatively limited scale. Tesla is expanding robotaxi services around Austin, but compared with Waymo there is a big gap in fleet size. While Waymo is already operating large-scale driverless commercial services and has moved into a fleet expansion phase, Tesla is in the process of improving the safety and operating scale of its driverless service.

Ultimately, the key point shown by this count is that Waymo is moving beyond proving its robotaxi technology to a phase of expanding vehicle production and actual deployment. With 684 converted vehicles stacked at the Mesa factory and the Ioniq 5 added, the issue ahead is likely less about production itself and more about how quickly completed vehicles are put into service to approach the goal of 1 million weekly rides.
