Kakao said on Wednesday it will run a 'Remember Dokdo' campaign for Liberation Day, linking user participation to donations.
The campaign will run through Aug. 15 on the social contribution platform Kakao Together Value and Kakao Map.
Users can take part in 2 missions. One mission is to place a South Korean flag on a Dokdo image on the Kakao Together Value campaign page. The other is to go to Dokdo on Kakao Map, capture a screen showing the character Chun-sik holding the South Korean flag, and upload it. Kakao plans to donate 815 won for each completed mission to support Dokdo history education for teenagers.
Kakao Together Value will run a fundraising box through Sept. 6 with the Dokdo Association of Korea for a Dokdo history education project for teenagers. If users leave comments in the fundraising box, Kakao will donate 100 won per comment on their behalf. It also linked the effort with regular donations to Korea Habitat that support descendants of independence patriots.
Kakao Makers will also sell 4 types of Liberation Day goods, including Chun-sik magnets, independence activist T-shirts and rose of Sharon phone cases. All proceeds will be donated to Korea Habitat and used for its house-building project for descendants of independence patriots.
Shin Cha-seop (신차섭), leader of Kakao Together Value, said it will continue to create opportunities for users to take part in donations in their daily lives.
Kakao Together Value has recorded a total of 1,750,000 participations since 2013 through its Liberation Day campaign and has used cumulative donations of about 3.5 billion won to support descendants of independence patriots. Kakao Makers also donated sales proceeds of about 360 million won to Korea Habitat through about 68,000 orders from 2020 to 2025.
