[DigitalToday reporter Sangyeop Oh (오상엽)] The KOSPI posted its first-ever 1,000-point one-day rise, setting a record in investor flows by type. Foreigners net bought more than 8 trillion won, centered on Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, while individuals net sold more than 10 trillion won.

The KOSPI closed at 6,595.45, up 1,001.89 points, or 17.91 percent, from the previous session, according to the Korea Exchange on Thursday. It was the first time the KOSPI has risen more than 1,000 points in a day. Both the percentage gain and the point rise were also the largest on record.

KOSPI 200 futures surged 18.79 percent, nearing the daily price limit. A buy-side sidecar, which halts the effect of program buy orders for 5 minutes, was triggered simultaneously in the KOSPI and KOSDAQ just after the open.

The number of sidecars triggered in the main board market this year rose to 44. Of those, buy-side sidecars accounted for 21. In the KOSDAQ, it was the 28th sidecar this year and the 15th buy-side sidecar.

Foreigners led the flows. Including trading in the regular market and the alternative venue NextTrade, foreigners net bought 8.8 billion won of domestic shares on the day. It was the largest amount on record.

Foreigners net bought 3.6 billion won of SK Hynix and 2.1 billion won of Samsung Electronics. The two stocks ranked first and second in foreigners' net buying.

Individuals, meanwhile, net sold 10.4 billion won. The individual net selling was also the largest on record. Individuals who increased holdings during the recent sharp selloff are seen as having reduced losses or realized profits during the rebound.

Samsung Electronics ended up 26.81 percent at 262,500 won. SK Hynix closed up 29.95 percent, near the daily price limit, at 1,718,000 won.

SK Hynix hit the upper limit for the first time since 2009, 17 years ago. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix accounted for 51.22 percent of the KOSPI's total market capitalization based on closing prices.

Samsung Electronics also re-entered the $1 trillion market-cap club on the back of the surge in its share price. U.S. market-cap site CompaniesMarketCap.com put Samsung Electronics' market capitalization at $1.212 trillion at 3:44 p.m. on Thursday.

Samsung Electronics ranked 12th in global market capitalization, up two places from the previous session, while SK Hynix rose two places to 18th with $849.4 billion.

Total market capitalization in the main board market increased to 5,445.2 trillion won, recovering above 5,000 trillion won for the first time in four sessions. Market capitalization, which had fallen to 4,611 trillion won on July 30, rose by about 834 trillion won in a single day.
