[DigitalToday reporter Hyeonwoo Choo] Japan’s foreign exchange service company Exchangers completed a verification of AI agent autonomous payment technology using yen-denominated e-money XJPY. CoinPost, a blockchain media outlet, reported on July 9 local time that the company confirmed in an internal environment a flow in which an AI agent handled everything from a content request to payment and receipt without human involvement.

The verification was conducted based on the x402 payment protocol for AI agents. x402 uses the HTTP standard “402 Payment Required” status code, in a structure where an AI agent completes payment after API access and then receives the content.

Exchangers built a payment processing server, a resource server and an AI agent on its private blockchain and conducted the demonstration in a closed internal environment. When the AI agent accessed the resource server, “402 Payment Required” was returned, and the agent autonomously generated an XJPY payment signature. The entire process, from executing and confirming the transfer to the resource server returning the content, was carried out without human involvement.

Exchangers presented the combination of yen payments, a KYC-completed wallet and gasless payments as the core of the implementation. It explained that because Coinbase’s existing main implementation assumes the dollar-based stablecoin USDC, there had been no x402 implementation in Japan combining a yen base, a KYC-completed wallet and gasless payments. The company said it implemented zero gas fees with its own miner and combined it with a KYC-completed wallet that responds to AML and the Act on Prevention of Transfer of Criminal Proceeds.

Exchangers plans to move to real-environment testing next. As it pursues the practical use of AI agent autonomous payments, it is also considering providing it to companies and developers at home and abroad.
