FortyTwoDot has joined the Eclipse Foundation in cooperation with the German Association of the Automotive Industry. FortyTwoDot said on Thursday it is joining the Eclipse Foundation with the group to strengthen the software-defined vehicle (SDV) ecosystem. The Eclipse Foundation is one of the world’s largest automotive open-source software foundations and was launched in June last year with 11 participating companies.

FortyTwoDot signed a memorandum of understanding with the German Association of the Automotive Industry. A total of 32 global companies across the automotive industry are participating in the project. They include automakers, parts and software suppliers, semiconductor companies and cloud specialists.

Through its participation in Eclipse SDV, FortyTwoDot will link its SDV full-stack platform and software capabilities now under development with the global open-source ecosystem. The company plans to design automotive software with enhanced safety through its participation and build a reliable software foundation.

The project will be centred on S-CORE, an open-source automotive-grade software stack under the Eclipse SDV working group. Participating companies can cut time and costs needed for development, integration and maintenance in non-differentiated software areas by up to 40 percent, the company explained.

The company also expects to cut time needed to bring products to market by up to 30 percent by using common in-vehicle components. It said improved development efficiency would allow resources to be focused on core technology development.

Choi Jinhee, acting CEO of FortyTwoDot, said open collaboration is essential to realising true SDVs in automotive software, where safety is key. Based on FortyTwoDot’s end-to-end experience across software, data and mobility platforms, Choi said the company would help build an integrated software foundation that automakers can trust.
