[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang (황치규)] Microsoft is using additional Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure to operate GitHub, Techzine reported on June 16 (local time).
The report said GitHub is seeing unprecedented growth as AI-powered software development surges. Microsoft is moving GitHub entirely to its Azure cloud. Even so, it is unusual for the company to tap AWS, Techzine said.
Microsoft had planned to run GitHub fully on Azure by 2027. But the schedule has been disrupted as platform usage has surged. Microsoft is temporarily deploying AWS to handle the load, the report said. Microsoft is also reviewing a multicloud strategy to secure additional capacity.
Techzine said the spread of AI coding tools has also significantly changed the nature of GitHub traffic. In the past, developers added and modified code directly. Now, AI agents rapidly run through code, pull requests and test cycles. That has increased the burden on databases, storage and search functions.
Microsoft is continuing its work to move GitHub to Azure while using AWS. A substantial portion of traffic is currently handled on Azure, and repository replication is nearly complete, Techzine said.
