South Korea's KOSPI posts record highs for a third straight session. Samsung Electronics rises more than 3 percent to lead the index higher.

The KOSPI ends April 23 up 57.88 points, or 0.90 percent, at 6,475.81 from the previous session's close. The index opens up 70.90 points, or 1.10 percent, at 6,488.83, setting a new all-time high.

It climbs to an intraday record of 6,557.76 at one point, but also falls to 6,309.10.

By investor type, retail investors buy a net 451.3 billion won worth of shares. Foreigners and institutions sell a net 49.9 billion won and 329.5 billion won, respectively.

Top stocks by market capitalisation show mixed moves.

Samsung Electronics closes up 3.22 percent at 224,500 won. SK Hynix ends up 0.16 percent at 1,225,000 won.

Doosan Enerbility rises 5.78 percent, SK Square gains 1.11 percent and Hanwha Aerospace adds 0.64 percent. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is flat.

LG Energy Solution falls 3.72 percent, Hyundai Motor drops 1.66 percent and Samsung Biologics loses 3.01 percent.

The KOSDAQ closes down 6.81 points, or 0.58 percent, at 1,174.31.

The won-dollar exchange rate ends at 1,480.90 won, up 1.40 won from the previous session.
