Image-based social media company Pinterest announced large-scale layoffs to expand investment in AI, TechCrunch reported on Jan. 27.
Pinterest plans to cut about 700 employees, representing 15 percent of its workforce, and reduce office space. The move is a strategic decision to accelerate AI-centered product development and cut costs, TechCrunch reported.
Pinterest has recently strengthened its AI capabilities by introducing an AI-based shopping guide, "Pinterest Assistant," and an AI personalized boards feature. The company plans to expand its dedicated AI team and redeploy existing staff toward AI development and execution.
Pinterest CEO Bill Ready (빌 레디) said in a recent earnings announcement, "We will drive AI innovation while minimizing costs by using open-source AI models."
