[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] Apple’s iOS 27.2 is increasingly likely to be released within October. Regular iPhone users are likely to move straight to iOS 27.2 without going through iOS 27.1.
On Oct. 7 (local time), IT outlet 9to5Mac reported that Apple has already been running iOS 27.2 beta tests for several weeks.
The key to the schedule shift is the launch of the 'iPhone Duo'. Apple is expected to release the iPhone Duo on Oct. 23 with iOS 27.1 installed, and signs so far suggest the version is unlikely to be distributed to other iPhone models. Existing iPhones are instead expected to update directly to iOS 27.2.
The reason Apple is running iOS 27.1 exclusively for the iPhone Duo has also emerged. It is to avoid revealing the iPhone Duo software experience in advance during the beta process. The outlet said Apple wants to keep details related to the software experience under wraps. As a result, Apple appears to have started test distribution of iOS 27.2 earlier than a typical x.2 update.
Support for an expanded set of Siri AI languages also underpins the likelihood of an October release for iOS 27.2. Apple said at the unveiling of iOS 27 last month that Siri AI would support French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish the following month. With support for those languages included in iOS 27.2, the rollout timing has effectively narrowed to October.
The release timing is most likely in late October. Apple has typically delivered its first feature update in late October after unveiling a major operating system version, and the same pattern is expected this time. For now, the week that includes Oct. 26 is being cited as the most likely window.
There is also still a possibility iOS 27.2 could arrive a little earlier. The schedule could be brought forward if some new hardware to be unveiled next week ships with iOS 27.2 preinstalled. By contrast, the home product lineup also being mentioned is unlikely to ship immediately. The first orders could be delivered in the final week of October, and there is speculation that tvOS 27.2 and HomePod 27.2 could be released around that time as well.
New features are also adding weight to iOS 27.2. Apple is preparing Apple TV app user profiles, dual capture for group FaceTime, a new suggestions feature in Messages, an overhaul of 'Up Next' in Apple Podcasts, and a design update for Apple Books. The significance of this update, however, lies more in its distribution strategy than in the number of features. That is because a trend has been confirmed in which Apple applies iOS 27.1 first to the iPhone Duo and bundles feature improvements for existing users into iOS 27.2, separating the product launch schedule from the operating system release timeline.
Against this backdrop, the actual arrival time of new features that regular iPhone users will feel now depends on the iOS 27.2 rollout date. With Siri AI language expansion, including Korean, included, attention is expected to focus on Apple’s operating system update schedule in late October.
